He was better educated than most municipal library assistants of the period and was a major figure in the early history of the AAL. He was its Honorary Secretary 1898-1900 and the founder and first editor of the Library Assistant. After emigrating he successfully organized the first library conference in South Africa, in 1903. He was a keen educationalist with a continuing interest, up to the time of his death, in the education of library assistants.
